What is an IK rating?
IK ratings are an international numerical classification; they indicate the degree of protection that enclosures provide for electronic equipment; protection against mechanical shocks that enter the device from the outside. This rating provides a means by which to determine the capacity of an enclosure to protect its contents from external shocks, according to IEC62262:2002 and IEC60068-2-75:1997 standards.
Simply put, the IK rating (impact protection) refers to the degree to which a device is resistant to impact, the higher the number, the greater the level of protection against impact, it’s that simple!
An IK10 rating on a camera means that the device is resistant to 20 joules (10 kg) of impact, making the camera extremely safe and impact-resistant. While an IK01 rating means that the camera can only withstand 0.15 joules (200 g) of impact.
We have created a table showing the differences between the different IK ratings, from IK00 to IK10. Please refer to the table below:
IK00 – No protection
IK01 – Resistant to 0.14 joules of impact (equivalent to the impact of a 0.25 kg mass falling from a distance of 56 mm above the impact surface)
IK02 – Resistant to 0.2 joules of impact (equivalent to the impact of a 0.25 kg mass falling from a distance of 80 mm above the impact surface)
IK03 – Resistant to 0.35 joules of impact (equivalent to the impact of a 0.2 kg mass falling from a distance of 140 mm above the impact surface)
IK04 – Resistant to 0.5 joules of impact (equivalent to the impact of a 0.25 kg mass falling from a distance of 200 1 mm above the impact surface.)
IK05 – Resistant to 0.05 joules of impact (equivalent to the impact of a 0.25 kg mass falling from a distance of 280 mm above the impact surface.)
IK06 – Resistant to 1 joule of impact (equivalent to the impact of a 0.25 kg mass falling from a distance of 400 mm above the impact surface.)
IK07 – Resistant to 2 joules of impact (equivalent to the impact of a 0.5 kg mass falling from a distance of 400 mm above the impact surface.)
IK08 – Resistant to 54 joules of impact (equivalent to the impact of a 1.7 kg mass falling from a distance of 300 mm above the impact surface. (IK09 – 10 joules of impact resistance (equivalent to a 5 kg object falling from a height of 200 mm above the impact surface). (IK10 – 20 joules of impact resistance (equivalent to a 5 kg object falling from a height of 400 mm above the impact surface).)
